Excellent commentary on being polite! I work in the admissions dept. of a rehab/nursing facility, and you would not believe the way people act sometimes. I’ll give you one recent example: We were full on the rehab side, so we assigned a man to a room on the side where there is a mixture of rehab and long term care patients. He and his wife arrived at dinner time, so a lot of the residents were in the dining area near the nurses station. His wife took one look at the residents (they are elderly, but not sick), and screamed, “My husband will NOT stay in this area with ALL THESE DISEASED PEOPLE!” Can you imagine how our residents felt when they heard her say this??
There is a right way and a wrong way to make a complaint – and the nice way gets better results. One thing people at facilities like mine don’t realize is that if you are a constant headache to the staff (by being unreasonable and hateful – I’m not talking about legitimate complaints made in a calm manner), you get put on the “do not return” list, and you will have to look for another facility if you need rehab in the future. Don’t burn your bridges by being nasty!
