Enjoying Good Smelling Flowers in the Garden

Enjoying Yummy Garden Smells

  • Plant lavender bushes or scented flowers by your clothesline. Each time the wind blows, it will blow the scent onto the clothes.
  • Plant scented flowers (honeysuckle, lilac, sweet peas, etc.) by your bedroom windows. Is there a better way to wake up in the morning or fall asleep at night than to the smell of flowers? I don’t think so!
  • Plant scented plants in gardens or pots on each side of your front door or the sidewalk leading to your door. People will feel good about coming to your home even before they get in the door.
  • Plant sweet smelling flowers around your front porch or deck where your family and friends gather, too.
  • Take the time to pick and smell the flowers. Just one small scented flower can make a whole room smell as good as or better than ten plug in air fresheners, so go out and pick a flower.

It’s time to open up those windows and let some fresh air in. Turn off the heat, turn off the air conditioning and save on your utilities.  I know a lot of you have allergies but a lot of people’s allergies are worse because of the bad air in the house. So try it you might like it.

Can you tell Spring has hit Kansas?

I LOVE having my clothes smell fresh from the outdoors after they have lined dried. No one in my family has a problem with this, but my niece has severe outdoor allergies that come back in on line dried clothing. So if anyone in your house has allergies be very careful what you plant near your clothes line! I have honeysuckle near my clothes line and I love thre light scent it leaves on our clothes, especially sheets!

I love open windows but suffer from seasonal allergies – one way I have lessened the severity of this is to purchase local honey and take a teaspoon of the honey every morning – within a month my allergies subsided and I just keep it up – it does get bad when I go back home to OK because now my allergies are worse there because I quit taking the local honey their. It has to be from a local honey farm in your area.

Nancy I remember hearing about this many years ago and had forgotten about it. It’s an interesting suggestion and may have to try to get Tawra and Mike to try this because they suffer from allergies too.
    Thanks for the idea.

Lavender is an antidepressant and the fragrance definitely will energize you if you have endured a sleepless night or are tired from a long day. Many recipes using lavender are available on the Internet.

My favorite old allergy and heat-exhaustion remedy came from a Florida beekeeper. Mix 2 spoons honey, preferably dark unfiltered wildflower honey, 4 spoonsful apple cider vinegar (accept no substitutes) and water to taste. The mixture should taste somewhat like apple juice. Drink over ice. This also assists in weight loss.

Ahhh… Kansas in the springtime! California is lovely too, but I do so miss the lilacs in the morning outside my bedroom window.

I love to hang my clothes out and do so most of the time – but I have a neighbor that loves to use their fireplace and that in turn makes my clothes smell smoky if I don’t hurry out and take them down, or worse, not hang them out at all.

Nancy, why don’t you just take a teaspoon of honey from each place?

Never plant lilac anywhere beside your house if your home has
a basement. The roots are very deep and intrusive and can actually crack a basement wall.
Plant your lilac minimum of 30 feet away from outside walls.

My mom mixes 2tsp apple cider vinegar and 2 tsp honey with one cup hot water as her morning drink with breakfast. She is 72, takes no medications and still uses her old pushplow. Honey and ACV is good for lots of things.

Honey is very useful in many health problems. It helps to get well faster when you have cold. Just add as many spoons in you hot tea as you can drink, because too much would be too sweet. I can’t stand very sweet drinks, (I always dilute my juice with water because it’s too sweet). I just take a few spoons before I drink the tea. It also helps with allergies, but it has to be local. I also has unlimited shelf life.
We are planning to get some bees this summer. My husband already bult 3 hives, I painted them, and they are waiting for the bees in the backyard. A gallon if local natural honey costs around $30 here, so buying it is very expensive, need to make our own.

I just love the smell of lavender. I buy herbs at the Farmers Market and keep pots of wonderful smelling herbs in my sunny room with all the window sills. They are so nice to put into drinks such as tea, lemonade and to add to grated soap balls.
