This easy homemade cough syrup recipe makes a cough remedy that is great to make if you run out of the store bought cough syrup or if you just prefer something where you know all of the ingredients.
I like to keep recipes on hand for alternatives for important things in case I run out of them. I tried making this easy homemade cough syrup recipe a few years back. I personally like this cough remedy better than the store cough syrup because I like how it works better. It is super easy to make with ingredients you already have at home.

Wirh the cayenne pepper doesn’t it burn?
Jill
Not really being mixed with the honey and everything else but like any medicine sometimes you need to just quickly swallow a spoonful to get better.
Ekaterina
Thanks for this recipe , we really need a lot of cough remedy during winter. One more question: how long could I keep it befote using?
Jill
It should keep quite awhile because none of the things in it really spoil and have a long shelf life.
Deb Cornett
Does it need to be refrigerated ? Does it need to be reheated each time one uses it?
Jill
Yes I would put it in the fridge. It will keep for a month to 6 wks. in there but you can freeze part of it too if you want too. You don’t need to reheat it but I would let it set out for a few minutes just to come to room temp.
Isabel
Do I need to refrigerate it or can I just leave it out after making it ?
Jill
You really don’t need to unless you will not be using it right away. A few days sitting out won’t hurt it because none of the ingredients that are used in it need to be refrigerated.
Anna
I personally wouldn’t keep in the fridge. Honey crystalizes when refrigerated, and both honey and vinegar are shelf stable with a life of forever. The spices also don’t really go bad, they just lose potency, but since honey itself helps coughs, it shouldn’t hurt anything.
