For “almost homemade” apple butter, I buy unsweetened organic apple sauce and start from there. I spice with cinnamon, ginger, allspice and cloves and add a smidge of salt and a little vanilla. Using deep Pyrex bowl, I microwave until reduced by half. A mesh spatter shield helps.
Stir once every five minutes or so. Use a blender if you want a smoother texture. Normally the apples are sweet enough, but if not, I add brown sugar or Splenda after cooking to taste.
Applesauce, even organic, is often cheaper than apples. Using a microwave is faster and there is less chance of scorching, but you can do this on the stove top or in a slow cooker with the kid ajar.

Hands down best apple butter recipe I have ever made. Sometimes I use 1 cup of white sugar and 1 cup of light brown sugar. Always turns out and my family just loves it.
Stay Well!

Oh thank you Barb so glad you like it. It is Tawra’s great grandma’s recipe that she had had for years so I don’t know how old it is.

I have made this apple butter and it is so easy. It is really good. This was my first time to make it.

So glad you liked it Janet. It was Tawra’s great grandma’s recipe that she had used for years. She did a lot of canning when she lived on their farm so she made sure they were easy recipes she used.

I just used this recipe from your cookbook 2 days ago. My granddaughter came for a visit and requested that I teach her how to make it. We made 4 jars full and she is taking them home which is 1,000 miles from my house. She even brought a cooler with her to get it there with it. She was so happy to find out how easy it was to make.
