Homemade Dry Erase Boards
Not only can you buy chalkboard paint but Rust Oleum makes a dry erase board paint that you can use most anywhere to make a homemade dry erase board. The possibilities are endless. Here are some ideas:
- Paint sections of wall in kids rooms, in the kitchen or in entry ways with dry erase board paint or chalkboard paint.
- Use dry erase paint on the back of pantry, bedroom, bathroom doors or coat closets where backpacks and coats are stored.
- Use it on canisters and containers in the kitchen, garage or on the bins the kids store their toys and other things in.
- Use it to label things like the ends of shelves. This way, if you decide to put something else in that area, you can just wipe it off and rewrite the new description instead of trying to remove a sticky sticker.
You can find dry erase board paint or chalkboard paint at most hardware stores like Home Depot, Ace Hardware or Lowe’s.

Where have I been living? In a closet???? I had NO idea there was ‘dry erase’ paint! I’m getting some today :)
Thank you!

Don’t feel bad Melissa. I just discovered this myself that is why I was so excited to share it with everyone. I think it is relatively new on the market.

You can make your own chalk board paint so that you can have any color you want! Mix 1 cup of flat latex paint with
1 Tablespoon of dry Non-sanded grout. You will want to do 2 coats of paint. Allow it to cure for at least a couple of weeks. I painted a roughly 2’x2′ section of my wall a different color using this method & it works great. You only want to mix enough paint for 1 coat at a time, because the grout makes it thicker. I bought a 1# can of grout at Ace for about $5 and that would be enough to several gallons of paint.

Also, in regards to Dry Erase paint. Any high gloss latex paint that is fully cured (at least 30days) will work as Dry Erase paint!
(the info you pick up having worked at a hardware store for 12+ years) :)

Awesome…thanks for your expertise.

I also noticed I can use the side of my fridge as a white board. I did have a small magnetic one on it but needed more room, so I started writing on the actual fridge. Works just like a dry erase one. No problems getting it wiped off.

Yeah, the fridge works great as a dry erase board, but not the textured ones! I have a texture on my fridge, so the marker does not come off completely. It takes a little more elbow grease to get it clean. It works, though.

Wow! Who knew? Thank you for sharing! I would be excited too!

I use my bathroom mirror as a dry-erase board all the time. It is fantastic for writing sweet notes to family members, reminders to myself, lists of things to do, etc. You HAVE to go to the bathroom, so you will see those messages pretty often and will remember them better. : )

You can use many things for dry erase, those shiny sheet protectors work great, you can put plain paper or graph paper or worksheets inside. Most laminate table tops also work(like school desks). Windows and mirrors work, any smooth surface works!

I’ve made magnetic chalk boards before. Just get something that magnets will stick to (oil change drip pans at WalMart work GREAT) and then paint with chalkboard paint. :)
