More Rice Krispie Treats Ideas:
- Drag out the good old homemade rice krispie treats recipe for the Fourth of July but try adding a new twist. Add red or blue food coloring to the melted marshmallows and then, using a large star cookie cutter, cut them into stars to pile high on a plate.Get out some of those red paper plates you bought on sale after Christmas or Valentine’s Day to serve your treats on the Fourth of July.
- Here’s another twist to the rice krispie treats: Add 1/3 cup peanut butter to the melted marshmallows and substitute frosted flakes for the Rice Krispies. You now have Tony the Tiger Treats.
- Instead of serving the same old rice krispie treats, add things like chocolate chips, M&M’s or nuts. You can also use different cereals like Honey Nut Cheerios, Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles. Of course, try to buy these in the off-brands to save.
- You can also drizzle a little melted chocolate, butterscotch, white chocolate or peanut butter chips over the top of homemade rice krispie treats. By drizzling things on top of cakes or cookies like this you can save by using less compared to spreading it all over.
- Rice Krispie Pops – Sometimes rice krispie treats can get sticky and gooey in the heat and humidity of summer so, for your next outside get-together, try rolling them into balls and stick a popsicle stick into each one. You could also roll them in sprinkles, candies or melted chocolate.
The sky is the limit. You can pretty much melt the margarine and marshmallows and throw anything in. Use up the last bits of leftover cereals, nuts, candies, sprinkles, etc.

My family loves rice crispie treats! It seems like my crew always opens 3 or 4 different kinds of cereal and then we end up with 3 or 4 different 1/2 bowls of cereal that no one wants to finish, so I use the “bottoms of the box” in my crispy treats. Its a great way to use up a dab and the kids think the crispy treats are fun with all the different cereals and colors in them.
Mary White
Brenda,
Do you mix the “bottoms of the box” cereals with the rice krispies?
Do you have to deduct the equivalent amount of rice krispies if you add another type of cereal?
My crew does the same thing, and it drives me nuts! We’ve got 4 different kinds of cereal in the freezer, probably a cup in each. I hate throwing it out, but they won’t eat it when it gets down to the last bit.
Bea
Jill you are making me hungry for these. Thanks for all the wonderful add-in ideas. Very creative. A nice low calorie treat. I like the making them into balls idea too.
TideMama
we do cocoa krispies with peanutbutter…a huge hit everytime :)
MS
YUM!
Bea
Those cocoa krispies with peanut butter sound so good!

i love rice krispy treats (homemade version) .. but whenever i make it i have the hardest time stirring the krispies in the marshmallow stuff … and they usually come out looking rather lumpy .. hehehe :D .. delicious .. but lumpy .. and one time i didnt add enuff krispies and it was too gloppy-like with all the marshmallow sauce .. my son in law and son loved it .. me and my daughter didnt care too much for it .. i thought it was rather too sweet ..
i think the coco krispies and pb and marshmallows would be good tho ..
i had them made with cheerios, m&m’s, peanuts and a tiny bit of marshmallows and they were good ..
its a cheap treat that both kids and adults like ..
:D

When I was in college, the student union cafeteria served Rice Krispie treats with coconut in them. To this day, those are the best Rice Krispie treats I have ever eaten! We almost always have some leftover coconut in our freezer from this or that baking project, so it’s easy to grab a handful and add it to the treats. Love the idea of dying the marshmallows red or blue, too!
Jill
Tanya that is a new one on me but I love coconut so bet it would taste really good. Will have to try it.
Clare
Once on a spur of the moment need for cookies my grand daughter and I devised and made the Crispy treats and added coconut.
We named them “Coca Doodle Doos, and they were a hit at her school party!
Jill
How cute Clare.
Bea
Jill, Last night I made some rice crispy treats and rolled them into a ball in the palm of my hands, like a snowball, and then rolled them in rainbow sprinkles. They are so pretty and festive looking. They look like fireworks do in the sky when they explode into all those colors. Real 4th of July looking and they taste great. Thanks for the ideas.
Jill
Just imagine all the different things you can roll them in from little candies or like everyone has been talking about even coconut which would give it a snow ball look.
Bea
Jill rolling them in coconut sounds terrific. I didn’t think of that!!! I love the way your mind works. You have a gift of creativity. Just think of how they would look for Christmas? Wow.
Bea
I wanted to tell you Jill that I wanted to try Coco Krispies with coconut. I made them into “snowballs” and then rolled them in coconut. They are so good. I know you would like them too. Also, for the 4th of July you can get the Berry Blue Jello and put some Kool-whip on top and a strawberry for red, white and blue and then make the rice krispy treats and make them into balls and roll them in rainbow sprinkles and that would look so pretty and your kitchen wouldn’t be overheated for an oven. I also tryed rolling the rice krispies in chocolate sprinkles and they are great too.

I started making these 48 years ago with the receipe on the Kellogs Rice Crispies Box, and it consisted of 1 stick of BUTTER, 1 pkg marshmallows, and 6 cups of Rice Krispies. I made them last week, and they NEVER got hard. They were so irresistable that they were gone in 3 or 4 days.
Mary White
Dianne,
Mine never harden up unless I put them in the fridge or freezer.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong? I use the recipe on the box of rice krispies as well.
Jill
Mary it may not really be you doing anything wrong. In some areas that have high humidity, especially in the summer, it can cause a recipe like this not to set up. You might try either adding a few more rice krispies or cutting back on the marshmallows and butter just a little bit and see if that helps. Most of all make sure you don’t make them when it is very humid
Bea
I use a little more butter too, so they don’t dry out as fast. I made half a batch and used 1/4 cup butter. If I were to make a full batch, I would use 1/2 cup butter. I don’t eat them very fast, so in order not to dry out and get hard, I use more butter, and they are so good.
Bea
I made rice krispie treats with caramel/vanilla marshmallows, and they are so good with chocolate sprinkles.

We dip half of the rice krispie treat in melted chocolate.

I like these ideas! I try to have a few cookie options on hand which don’t involve heating up the kitchen in summer. You have just given me more ideas. Lili at creativesavv.blogspot.com has a good microwave brownie recipe. I like to make traditional no-bakes (with cocoa and oatmeal) on the stovetop. I also have a recipe variation on rice krispie treats called Scotcheroos–it involves peanut butter and corn syrup in with the rice krispie layer, and melted chocolate chips/butterscotch chips spread on top. These are richer than traditional RK treats but way yummy.

We are going on a big family picnic on Saturday and I am bringing a huge fruit salad but wanted to take one extra thing. I think the Rice Krispy treats are the perfect addition. I love the idea of making them blue and putting them on a red plate. Think I will roll some in coconut so I’ll have all the patriotic colors covered.
Thanks for these great suggestions.

Yesterday I was going through the pantry and saw a half empty bag of marshmallows and wondered how to use it up, and now I know what I will do. Had not even thought of Rice Krispie treats. they are a favorite of mine. I like them the original way, but my dad will make them with granola or something like that in them.
Valarie S.
One of my favorite add-ins for rice Krispy treats is some maple flavoring. But then I love anything maple. :)
Sandra D.
I make these with popcorn. I don’t buy cereal so I use what I have. Popcorn is cheaper and takes really good too.
Sandra D.
Oops! I meant *tastes* really good too.

My mom used to make “rice krispie log” growing up. Prep a recipe of of rice krispie cake as per basic instruction, but instead of a pan, pat it flat on a rimmed cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Then, spread a can of chocolate (or whatever flavour you like) of frosting on the cake. Roll jelly-roll style, then slice.
It was a favourite in the cooler when we went to the beach growing up (along with Knox Blox and watermelon, and of course, sandy PB sandwiches, LOL).
CJ
Also, I know not “4th of July”, but at Christmas, my mom would use corn flakes instead of rice krispies, and add green food colouring. Then shape into a wreath, add red and green m&m’s and a bow… voila, an edible wreath for the buffet table!
Cheers ladies!

Mix in 1 package of unsweetened Kool-aid (any flavor) to the melted butter/marshmallow mixture. It colors the rice krispies and adds flavor. I really like the watermelon, cherry, and fruit punch flavors.

Easy recipe: Spray your pan. Put marshmallows on bottom of the pan. Put rice krispies on the marshmallows, butter over the top of all. Put in oven for about 8 minutes. Super easy.
